More than a decade after completion, we returned to Kauhale Papapa to capture new photography and see how the architecture and landscape have evolved together. Located on the Island of Hawaii, the home was designed in response to the rugged terrain, resting quietly among the lava rock and golden grass, and shaded by kiawe trees.
Through the years, the once sparse site has turned lush and green, changing the relationship between the buildings and their surroundings. The restrained palette of wood, stone, concrete, and metal was selected with time in mind, allowing the architecture to be shaped by the elements. The result is an unmistakable patina—one that’s earned—as the house gradually grows closer to the land on which it was built.
These visits are a reminder that these homes are never truly finished. Instead, they age gracefully with each passing season.
