The Mountain Wood residence comprises separate buildings arranged to create a variety of complementary indoor-outdoor spaces accommodating varied living experiences. A barn frames the stone entry of the residence beyond. Reminiscent of regional agrarian compounds in form and function, the buildings are defined by their strong asymmetrical lines. A material palette of stone and western red cedar is contrasted by contemporary elements of exposed steel, and large expanses of glass.

“There is a balance between nature, rustication, and modern with the language and materials. It has an unexpected geometry that balances elegantly with the architecture. The architecture and landscape are one composition. The plantings are interesting and the materials are rustic and of the place.”

“We wanted a home that was architecturally significant and unique, yet simple and comfortable, where traditional elements are expanded upon in a modern way.”

“The project is a good example of combining forward thinking design with ecological principles. It marries the house to the site and the site to the surrounding regional landscape.”
