Quintessa Winery has been honored by AIA San Francisco with an award of merit.
“This crescent-shaped winery fits snugly into the landscape and makes a natural amphitheater for wine-making. Trucks swoop up the driveway, their cargo of grapes is crushed on the roof terrace and gravity-fed through roof hatches into steel fermentation tanks below. Bottled wines are then transferred into caves dug into the hillside. Stone, steep and concrete reappear in the visitor center above that houses a wine-tasting room and offices. The jury commended the dramatic gesture of the building, as well as the modern structure’s ability to depict the ancient story of winemaking.”
