Kalihiwai Pavilion

Perched upon the hill, you’re fully immersed in ocean views, with the breeze grazing your skin.

Floating like a beacon on a verdant bluff overlooking the Pacific, the pavilion provides terra firma for intimate and large gatherings alike. Rooted and open, it is fertile ground for familiarity—with oneself, family, friends, or the landscape.

With a sloping shed roof and heavy cedar structure, the agrarian simplicity fortifies the pureness of its program. At its core, the space is about transparency and connection.

There is a warmth stemming from the enduring materials—the coarse limestone walls, the smooth cedar ceilings—and the tropic’s embrace that envelopes you, grounding you with each step.

“Spectacular and simple is not an easy balance to achieve, and yet, here it is.”
Jenn Thornton, Contributing Writer, Modern Luxury Hawai'i

Large swathes of glass place you deep within the lush drama of the equatorial terrain. Morning sunlight filters through wood screens that overlay walls of windows, and as the afternoon slowly unfolds, the light transforms into a dance of shadows across the breezeway.

“It is a flowing, serene dream of a structure that none of us would mind spending time in.”
Jury, AIA Honolulu Design Awards
