In Hawaiian culture, kuleana refers to the reciprocal relationship between a person, what it is they choose to care for and protect, and the shared benefit or return from that relationship. It is a word we hear often at Walker Warner, as it is deeply ingrained in the projects we design and the way we see the world.
Earlier this fall, Partner Greg Warner kicked off the Monterey Design Conference with his talk, “Kuleana: Exploring the Design Ethos of Walker Warner,” hosted by AIA Monterey Bay. In the presentation, he discusses his childhood in Hawaii, early inspirations, and how kuleana has shaped his work over the past 35 years.
